Weird and wonderful world of knowledge exchange

Participants collaborating during workshop

This week I ran a one day Introduction to UX and Journey Mapping workshop for 12 businesses and organisations in Cornwall with James Chudley.

In university jargon the workshop was knowledge exchange (KE) which describes when researchers share their work beyond universities and external perspectives are brought in.

What was exchanged? As facilitators, we shared principles of user-centred design and how to map out customer/user journeys. In exchange, we learnt about a diverse range of SME businesses, the local context, and how our workshop and method could be adapted in future.

There was also knowledge exchange between facilitators – I got insights into how UX is used on larger-scale commercial and public sector projects, whilst James C got insights about how UX is taught in higher education.

What the jargon and discussions about KE often don’t capture is that it should be weird. If it’s done right, you should feel uncomfortable as you take ideas to a new audience. It might also be wonderful because your perspective will be challenged and you’ll learn a bit more about a thing you thought you knew a lot about.
